Where did kickboxing originate? |
Most martial arts, including kickboxing, come from Pankration - the ancient form of Greek fighting that paved the way for some of today's most popular martial arts. kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Karate derived their aggressive kicks from Pankration. Modern kickboxing is a refined combination of martial arts such as Muay Thai kickboxing from Thailand. |
Is kickboxing hard on the knees? |
The classes at HMC are designed to be small to ensure close supervision of students by instructors. Instructors are intensely focused on teaching proper form to make sure no one gets hurt throwing a punch or a kick the wrong way. The chances for injury in recreational sports like cycling, tennis, weightlifting or surfing are much higher than in environments where you movements are supervised. Supervision is the key and the equipment worn is meant to protect from injury. The sport of Kickboxing does not emphasize attacking knee joints, shoulders, hips, or other sensitive body parts. |
Do I have to spar if I come to train? |
No. You decide what level you want to take your training to and how far you want to go. If you are a novice, you must go to the orientation session and following that, you are welcome to attend the basic boxing and basic kickboxing classes. If you feel that you are ready to spar, you are welcome to join the sparring class. We offer one sparring class once per week. |
How do I start? |
The very first thing you should do is come to our gym and observe a class in session. Talk to Sensei Haru about what your focus is and decide if HMC is what you are looking for. The next step would be to attend an orientation class which gives you the opportunity for one-on-one instruction. This gives you the necessary elements needed to be able to start going to the regular classes. |
What do I need? |
You will need a school t-shirt, boxing gloves, shin/instep guards, and hand wraps. We can order these things for you if you do not already have your own. |
